Note that breaking git-fmt-merge-msg might be a good way to force somebody to rewrite it in C ;-) Note that on my iBook (where I reported the Devel::PPPort problem), I _do_ have perl modules compiled from source, using SWIG. So, there _should_ be no problem to get it to run (although I have problems with my eyes ever since I looked into the code generated by SWIG).
